Final Results of the 2009 - 2010 Log1 Contest

Here is a table of the high scores on each topic test and individual test at each math level of the 2009-2010 Log1 contest. These scores determined how the raw scores were scaled.

Neal Wu, a Mu student, from Baton Rouge Magnet had top scores on all three rounds for a perfect 300. For schools, Vestavia Hills scored a remarkable 1626 points out of a possible 1800. A breakdown of the participation by region, math level, etc. is found in this report.

The final standings for schools and students by region are given in these reports: Region 1, Region 2, Region 3 and Region 4. The national Mu Alpha Theta office has again donated prizes for students and schools. The winners are posted here.

Round 1 High Scores

The high scores on the Logs and Exponents test was 75 (perfect) for all three levels. The scaled score for a raw score of r would then be s = r/75*100. The Probability test was harder and the high scores were 75 for the Mu level, but only 55 for the Alpha level and 52 for the Theta level. A raw score of t on the Theta Probability test would then be scaled as s = t/52*100.

Scoring Method For Awards

At the end of each round, the raw score for each student is standardized by dividing by the highest score attained by a student for that test. For example, if a Theta student takes the Log1 and Exponents topic test and scores 45 points and the top score by the Theta on the same test is 60. The student score would be standardized by 45 divided by 60 times 100 equals 75. In this way, the tests are normalized for difficulty and each round is weighted the same.

Each student test score will be scaled to account for varying test difficulty. The test score will be divided by the maximum test score for that test and math division and multiplied by 100. A student’s overall score will be the sum of their scaled scores on the three tests and will thus be a whole number between zero and three hundred.

The top ten individuals in each division in each region (based upon the sum of their scaled scores on the three tests) will receive a plaque and the next fifteen will receive a certificate.

The top ten schools in each region will receive plaques. School awards will be given in each region based upon their overall scores, which will be the sum of the school’s two top student overall scaled scores in each division (a total of six students) and round. In the topic test rounds, the highest scoring student in each topic test and division will contribute to the school score.
